September 2019 arrivals fall short of predictions
In comparision to September 2018’s 149,087 arrivals, the 108,575 total visitors in September this year reflects a 27.2% decline.
India, China, United Kingdom, Australia and Germany were Sri Lanka’s top five international tourist generating markets in September this year.
27% of the total traffic received in September 2019 came from India, trailed by China and UK with 8% each and followed by Australia and Germany with 6% (each).
Year-to-date ending September 2019, a total 1,376,312 of tourists visited Sri Lanka. It is a 20.5% drop over last year when 1,731,922 of tourists has visited the country during the same period.
Sri Lanka’s top five international tourist generating markets for the period January to September 2019 are India, United Kingdom, China, Germany and France.Together, they account for nearly half (49%) of the total tourists who have visited the country in the first nine months of this year.
India with 17% of the tourist traffic received between Januaryto September 2019 leads the pack. However, the total number of arrivals from india, year-to-date, is still a near 20% less than the total visitors who arrived from that country, during the same period in 2018. 3rd placed China struggles with a staggering 41% year-on-year deficit in arrivals.
Despite the drop in tourist arrivals in September 2019, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) maintains the annual projection of 2.1 million tourists for the year. To do so, Sri Lanka will have to attract over 720,000 tourists during the remainder of the year to achieve the target while recording 20 percent compound annual growth during the remaining three months.
