Emirates offer free COVID-19 insurance cover for all passengers

Passengers flying on Emirates, regardless of which class they fly in, would receive free coverage for medical expenses of approximately US$ 174,000 and quarantine costs of approximately US $ 116 per day for 14 days, for any passenger that is detected having COVID-19 during their travel, while away from home.

The cover is effective for any passenger flying from 23rd July upto and including 31st October, and is valid for a full 31 days, starting from the date of his or hers first flight with the airline. The cover is valid for the first leg of the traveler’s journey, regardless of if the journey continues beyond the final Emirates destination: meaning, that anyone who moves to a new destination after their original flight will still stand to receive the full benefit of the cover.

A major stumbling block to re-commencing international travel has been the refusal of most insurers to provide coverage for pandemics including the coronavirus sometimes labeled (in January 2020) as “known or foreseen” events.

With the airline claiming it to be ‘a world’s first’, Emirates group chairmen and Chief executive, Sheik Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said the airline was taking COVID-19 protection “ to the next level”. Going on to add, “We know people are yearning to fly as borders around the world gradually re-open, but they are seeking flexibility and assurances should something unforeseen happen during their travel”.

There is no need for passengers to fill out any forms or present documents to receive the coverage, should they be diagnosed with COVID-19 while travelling. They simply require calling a dedicated hotline posted on the airline’s website.

The Emirates offer raises the bar…from what the Lufthansa Group (operating Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and Swiss),  which  last month offered,  an “all-round carefree package” insurance that guarantees a return flight for customers in case borders shut down again.

Unlike the Lufthansa Group’s insurance package which offers ticket flexibility and potential quarantine costs to passengers on its inter-European network, Emirates has pushed the boundaries to include every passenger taking any of its flights, thus positioning the airline far above other competitors.

Emirates Airlines, after virtually grounding much of its fleet at the very outset of the coronavirus outbreak, has resumed flights and now flies to 60 destinations in its network.
