World's first hotel service robot coming to US market in 2022

Only a few years ago, outside of sprawling factories, robots were the realm of science fiction. Today, automatons are making their way into our daily lives, in no short part due to social distancing requirements, as robots don’t need to breathe. It may not be far off in the future when robot-led services become essential to keeping the world moving while human overlords remain at a safe distance!

LG’s CLOi family of robots led by GuideBot, ServeBot, ChefBot and UV robot demonstrate capabilities that go beyond welding car sheet metal and playing chess.

For instance LG CLOi GuideBot, designed as an information desk for airports, shopping malls and exhibition halls, boasts an expansive touchscreen that houses a variety of information to help people get where they’re going easily. LG CLOi ChefBot is a six-axis multi joint robot that can prepare delicious noodle-based dishes for customers at restaurants with machine-like consistency. Then there is the LG CLOi BaristaBot offering its future-inspired expertise at select cafes in Seoul and lending a helping hand during a time of prolonged social distancing. Designed with the ability to consistently deliver a delicious serving of coffee, this supercharged barista utilizes its vast database of type of beans, water temperature and brewing time to create a perfect cup every time.

And now, LG Business Solutions USA has announced that the LG CLOi ServeBot, the world’s first hotel service robot, is coming to the U.S. market in early 2022.Model LDLIM21 is the world’s first commercial service robot to receive UL 3300 certification for safe operation in “complex commercial environments”, including restaurants, shops and hotels.

LG CLOi ServeBot comes in two helpful variants; drawer and shelf - to deliver goods inside hotels and restaurants. Whether from one floor to another or navigating tables at a posh Italian restaurant with plates of pasta, this smart robot can take multiple instructions at once to deliver stuff in the correct order following the most efficient route possible.

The robots can carry up to 30 kilograms of food or goods held in three shelves and work non-stop for up to 11 hours on a single charge. The robot can be programmed for a variety of floor plans, enabling precise multi-point deliveries ranging from densely packed restaurants to hotel receptions. Combining data from a LIDAR detector, a 3D camera, a Time of Flight (ToF) sensor and a bumper sensor, it can recognise stationary and moving objects in its path and make real-time adjustments to avoid collisions.

Each shelf also has its own ToF sensor, so the robot knows when an item has been removed and it can move on to the next destination. ToF sensors determine how far away objects are by measuring the time it takes a pulse of light to be reflected back, making them useful for both navigation and shelf occupancy detection.

Jeffrey Weiland, B2B robotics team leader at LG Business Solutions USA commented: “The LG CLOi ServeBot is truly a breakthrough for all kinds of consumer-focused businesses, from restaurants to retail stores to hotels.“As the first commercial service robot to receive UL certification for safe operation in consumer environments, the CLOi ServeBot’s semi-autonomous operation offers businesses an effective means to provide enhanced service, while freeing staff to focus on customer relations and build relationships that encourage repeat visits.

“Whether it’s delivering food from the kitchen to a table or packages from the storage room to the front counter, LG’s CLOi ServeBot can navigate virtually any environment and free up staff to handle direct customer service.”
