Sri Lanka in 'Best countries to retire' listings

Living in another country is a save-your-retirement move that more people than before are now considering. Many believe that looking for an affordable place to retire is a good idea – even if they think they have plenty of money to retire on. That’s because as people get older they have to contend with illness and other health issues associated with aging. An inexpensive retirement means planning and being prepared for problems one would not have about during ones’ younger years.

For some people early retirement is a really exciting stage in life, especially when they are no longer in love with their jobs or the work they do on a daily basis. The reason retirement is so exciting for such people is that it is a golden opportunity to live on their own time and play by their own rules – where one does not have to abide by the eight hours a day work routine or having to show up to a desk job at eight-thirty in the morning Monday to Friday, week after week.

In this context there is emerging a trend where an Increasing number of  people are looking out for countries that can satisfy these desires and Sri Lanka is one of many choices, that appears in various listings.

The ‘Best Countries to Retire 2021’ World Population Review lists Sri Lanka as number 21 within its top 25 countries rankings. Heading the list is Panama with 88 points out of a maximum 100. Ahead of Sri Lanka’s 77.4 points, is Vietnam occupying the 19th spot, Cambodia in 12th place, Thailand at 9th and Malaysia taking 5th place – making it a total four Asian countries that made it on their listings.

USNews, in its latest review of 78 countries in the world, places Sri Lanka in 47th place in its Comfortable Retirement Rankings, having moved up from 50th place (out of 73 countries) in the 2020 rankings. This is what it says on Sri Lanka, “Referred to as the teardrop of India, Sri Lanka sits just off the southeast coast in the Indian Ocean. Scars of a bitter civil war are fading, and an island nation rich with resources and ripe for adventure is shining through. The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, previously known as Ceylon, is governed by an elected president and legislature. The young nation was born in 1948, when the early Sinhalese settlers claimed independence from the British, putting an end to a string of colonization by many countries, including Portugal and the Netherlands”.
