Sri Lanka welcomes over 47,000 tourist arrivals in July 2022

A total 47,293 visitors to Sri Lanka was recorded during the month of July 2022. This represented a near 44% month-on-month increase over June’s 32,856 arrivals.

6,013 Indians arrived in July 2022, putting India at the top of the ‘highest number of visitors’ in-the-month list.  Germany with 3,666 tourists came second with France coming a close third with 3,567 arrivals.

The arrivals for July nevertheless fell short of the 106,500 visitors who arrived in March this year – which incidentally, is by far is the highest in any month, this year todate.

It must be recalled that in July 2019, total arrivals to Sri Lanka hit 115,701 – a 83% increase over June that particular year. However, due to border closures during the height of the pandemic, there were no arrivals during July 2020. Last year, July saw just 2,429 in total arrivals – a mere trickle, as the country struggled to get back to its feet from the devastating impact of COVID-19.

The top three source markets for Sri Lanka during the first seven months in 2022, were India with74, 790 arrivals, United Kingdom with 58,879 arrivals and the Russian Federation with 48, 321.

The cumulative total of arrivals to Sri Lanka for the period January to July 2022 stands at 458,670.

As per the Central Bank, tourism receipts in June totaled US$ 59.1 million, marginally up from May’s earnings of US$ 54.3 Million – still a long way from the US$ 191.5 Million generated in March. Data on receipts in July are not available but we reckon it to be around US$ 77 Million or so, pushing the cumulative earnings in the first seven months to over US$ 800 million.
