Charging diners for each approach of the waiter to the table

They say that nothing is free in life, but one bar in Zamora, Spain has taken this concept to a totally different level. The Spanish bar sparked outrage for charging its customers for every time the waiter comes to their table on the outdoor terrace - and even making they pay for the cutlery.

Tourist Blas Galey Hermoso, from Andalucía, complained about the bar that charges not only for food and drinks but also for each approach of the waiter to the table. He was surprised to find a discrepancy in the check, asking for the final bill. It turned out that for each approach of the waiter, 20 cents were added to the amount, and cutlery cost the visitor 0.85 Euro.

Calling out the eatery, Mr. Hermoso in a post to twitter said: "Something strange happened to us a few days ago in Benavente."Every time the waiter came to the terrace table to bring something: beer, the tapa... he charged us 20 cents. The last straw was the euro that he charged us to put some cutlery to cut a toast that we had ordered."

Some more customers had the same experience as Blas and took to Google reviews to explain.

One person said: 'They charged me for cutlery service and the amazing thing we ordered several beers and they charged us 20 cents for each trip of the waiter to come and bring them.

Juan Diaz in response suggested a solution, “Tell the waiter not to bring the order in small drops, bring the entire order at once, that way they would only charge 20 cents. Although the perfect solution would be to never go to that restaurant.”

A similar though slightly different experience was related by a woman after a trip to Tenerife. She and her partner again sat on the terrace and ordered some drinks, before a waitress approached and asked them if they would like a blanket to keep warm.

When the couple went to pay the bill they discovered they had been charged 6 Euros for the use of the blanket. When they complained, they were told by the manager that they should have asked if the blanket was free.

So, be warned, a show of ‘consideration’ under the guise of hospitality… in certain places can come at a cost!
