7 standouts about Icons of the Seas - the world's largest cruise ship
In January 2024, the ‘Icon of the seas’ will begin service as the world’s largest cruise vessel. The 20-deck floating resort will feature 2,805 rooms to sleep 7,600 guests. According to owners room bookings for the US$2 billion ship are almost sold out for its late January maiden voyage – barring a few balcony staterooms and suites selling for over$ 4,670 per person.
There are seven features that will make Royal Caribbean’s next mega ship different from any current cruise vessel:-
- The 1,198 feet long mega vessel will be the new world record for the world’s largest cruise ship when launched. That’s the equivalent of more than three football fields and just 52 feet shorter than the height of the Empire State Building, not including the spire. The ship will have 20 decks – 18 for guests. Its gross tonnage of 250,800 is five times that of the Titanic.
- The ship can carry a total guest capacity of 7,600 and when the 2,350 crew is added is a few hundred more than the population of Bar Habor Maine – which is tagged as the US’s top small town to visit this year by US News & World Report.
- In terms of accommodations, the ship will have 28 different stateroom options. This will range from the windowless staterooms to new-to-brand accommodations like the infinity balcony cabin with a nook for children and the glamorous $ 75,000-a-week Ultimate Family Townhouse.
- Icon will offer more than 40 ways to drink, dine and be entertained, including more than 20 dining venues ( from a grab-and-go to a sushi and street food spot, to a refined 8-course menu in a swanky restaurant to a steakhouse to an all-day brunch spot to many buffets) plus 15 bars ( from a dueling piano bar to a jazz club and a coffee based cocktail bar and several nightlife experiences), catering to every budget.
- Families will likely be a huge demographic aboard this giant cruise ship. Choose from eight “neighborhoods” including a Central Park packed with live plants; a massive water park; a three-deck cluster of pools; a massive dome featuring a waterfall and performances designed for families. “Surfside” will be a go-to for a calmer getaway for travelers of all ages. Thrill Island on the other hand will suit families who wish to break a sweat and get their adrenaline pumping – be it rock climbing, a mini-golf course, and a one-of –a-kind rope obstacle course 155 feet above the ocean.
- Thrill Island will also house ‘Category 6’ - the world’s largest water park at sea according to Royal Caribbean. Category 6 is one of the most talked about features aboard the cruise vessel. It is home to the tallest water slide at sea.
- Seven pools – one for every day of the week for those who book a suite. This includes a “suspended infinity pool” that will function like a pool club with DJ and what Royal Caribbean considers is the largest pool at sea flanked by several lily-like elevated hot tubs.
According to travel adviser Danny Genung, CEO of Harr Travel, Icon of the sea is perfect for multigenerational families who want to travel together, because It offers a perfect cruise for lots of different people at different times in life.
