July 2026 brings 196,845 international visitors to Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka recorded 196,845 tourist arrivals in July 2026, marking a slight 1.7% year-on-year contraction compared to the 200,244 arrivals during the same month last year.
According to official data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), this minor dip represents stabilization for the island nation's tourism industry, following much steeper double-digit drops earlier in the year, caused by regional global tensions.
In March and April, the sector suffered steep YoY declines of 19.7 percent and 22.3 percent, respectively. Then followed a brief rebound in May, soon to return to volatility in June, which saw a 9.9 percent drop to 124,551 arrivals, from the 138,241 visitors recorded in June 2025.
Robust demand from neighboring India cushioned the overall slowdown - bringing in 44,547 visitors in July 2026, reflecting a 20.0 percent surge from the 37,128 arrivals recorded in the same month last year.
The “Top 10” contributing nations for the month were: India with 44,547 visitors (23% of total monthly arrivals), followed by United Kingdom: 21,834 visitors (11%), Netherlands: 12,493 visitors (6%), China: 12,336 visitors (6%), France: 10,102 visitors (5%) Germany: 8,838 (5%), Maldives: 5,757 (3%), US: 5,376 (3%) and Canada: 4,753 (2%).
With the conclusion of July, the cumulative international tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka for 2026 reached 1,343,418. India remains the dominant primary driver for the country's year-to-date tourism metrics, bringing in over 332,000 travelers so far this year.
At the mid-way of this year, i.e. by end June, tourist arrivals fell 9.9 percent, year-on-year, with total arrivals during the first half of 2026 dropping to 1,146,573 compared to 1,168,044 arrivals in the first half of 2025.
Earnings from Tourism between January and June 2026, totaled US$ 1,511 million. This is a decline of 11.8% when compared to the corresponding period in 2025.
The probability of Sri Lanka meeting its revised annual target of 2.5 million tourist arrivals this year remains highly ambitious at the current pace. With 1,343,418 arrivals secured by end-July, the country faces a significant deficit of nearly 1.16 million visitors that must be bridged over the remaining five months of the year. This requires the country to attract an average influx of approximately 231,000 tourists per month from August to December.
