the US and China command 61% of the global hotels-on-the-pipeline count
In 2011, hotels under construction worldwide stood at 6,907 hotels and 1,257,296 rooms as per the “Global Global Construction Pipeline Trend Report," released bi-annually by Lodging Econometrics. The same report goes on to state that the total global construction pipeline now stands at 12,839 hotels with 2,158,422 rooms. This represents a staggering 86 percent increase over the past seven years.
Top of the list, Top Cities
The US which has seen an annual increase since 2011 leads the way with 5,312 hotels and 634,501 rooms – accounting for 41 percent of hotels in the total global construction pipeline. China, which in the past 4 ½ hours has seen rapid expansion in the hotel construction sphere accounts for 20 percent, with 2,523 hotels and 556,645 rooms. The US and China alone therefore account for 61 percent of the worldwide hotels-on-the-pipeline count. Indonesia, with 394 rooms and 66,759 rooms is a distant third place, followed by Germany with 247 hotels and 47,155 rooms and the UK trailing behind also with 247 hotels and 36,487 rooms.
Understandably, the cities with the largest hotel construction pipeline are mostly in the US with New York’s 169 hotels and 29,365 rooms in the forefront. Dallas with 156 hotels and 18,908 rooms, Houston with 150 hotels and 16,321 rooms and Shanghai with 121 hotels and 24,759 rooms make the top 5 cities. Dubai slots in at second place with 163 hotels and 47,783. Of the top 10 cities having pipelines with more than 100 hotels, six are located in the U.S. while three are located in China.
Top Companies, Top Brands
Leading the race in the large-scale luxury and upper-upscale sector, for franchise companies in the global construction pipeline is Marriot International with 2,324 hotels and 301,058 rooms. In second place is Hilton with 2,202 hotels and 327,723 rooms, followed by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) with 1,653 hotels and 244,038 rooms, Accor hotels (currently opening, on average, a new hotel in the Asia Pacific every three days), comes in at fourth place with 809 hotels and 147,647 rooms. Taking fifth and sixth places are Choice Hotels with 1,024 hotels and 84,350 rooms and Hyatt, at 212 hotels with 45,117 rooms, respectively. In the mid-scale sector, Best Western’s pipeline of 275 hotels and 29,243 rooms leads.
Currently, there are a total 610 hotel brands globally. Topping the list is Marriott with 29 labels with Accor a close second with 25. Making up the remaining ‘top 6’ is Hilton with 15, Hyatt and IHG with 12 each and Choice with 11.
