Celebrity chef at Michelin-starred restaurant quits after accusations of abuse“Noma is not a story of innovation. It is a story of a maniac who bred a culture of fear, abuse, and exploitation.” - Jason Ignacio White
A celebrity chef at a Michelin-starred restaurant dubbed the world’s best has quit after being accused of bullying and abusing staff. René Redzepi (48), built the world’s most celebrated restaurant. (3 Michelin stars, ranked #1 on World’s 50 Best Restaurants 5 times). Then 56 former employees told a very different story — and it all unraveled on opening night in Los Angeles.
According to the New York Times and other outlets, the abuse, revealed is alleged to have spanned almost a decade, from 2009 to 2017. Accusations include punching staff, jabbing cooks with kitchen tools, public humiliation, and threats tied to immigration status.
One female chef said he punched her in the ribs while she was adjusting dining-room music. She fell against a metal counter, cut her hip, and continued working while bleeding. In February 2014, Redzepi reportedly marched the kitchen staff outside in freezing weather to humiliate a sous-chef for playing techno music before punching him in the ribs. Entire brigades were allegedly forced to stand in a circle while a single employee was publicly shamed or attacked. Workers say they were threatened with industry blacklisting or immigration consequences for themselves or their families.
Hours before publication, Redzepi posts an apology on Instagram, widely criticized as pre-emptive damage control. “The recent weeks have brought attention and important conversations about our restaurant, industry, and my past leadership,” Redzepi said in a statement on Thursday. He acknowledged that “an apology is not enough” and said he “takes responsibility for my own actions” .Adding: “I have worked to be a better leader and Noma has taken big steps to transform the culture over many years. “I recognize these changes do not repair the past.”
The latest bombshell allegations came just days ahead of the opening of a Noma pop-up in Los Angeles – where a meal will cost $1,500 and sold out in 60 seconds. It runs through June 26, 2026. Sponsors (including AmEx, Resy, Blackbird, and Cadillac), have since pulled their funding for the Southern California residency, which opened on Wednesday to a small gathering of protesters and will operate without him.
Redzepi also shared a tearful video to social media. He said: “I’m sorry everyone’s in this situation, I really, really am.“I don’t think this represents our team.” He then urged his staff to “fight, be in this, find strength in each other as a team, and know that I’m doing this to protect everyone here”.
It is now reported that Noma has implemented workplace reforms including a four-day workweek, paid internships, a dedicated HR team, and an external workplace audit.
