Sri Lanka receives 241,663 arrivals in December 2019

The number of tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka in December 2019 totaled 241,663. This is 4.5% less than the 253,160 visitors who came during December 2018. Last month’s performance denotes a robust continuation of the industry’s recovery since the 21st April 2019 tragedy.

Contrary to the fears of a 30% drop in arrivals, as expressed by tourism officials in April, in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday incident, Sri Lanka ended 2019 with 1.91 million tourists. Despite been 18% below the 2.33 million arrivals in 2018, the results for last year  assumes laudable significance when one takes into consideration that it was achieved after the  April disruption, followed by an environment of political uncertainty, the Presidential election and the casting aside of the long awaited Global public relations and marketing campaign.

Sri Lanka received another boost after CNN Travel placed the island among its list of ’20 best places to visit in 2020’. Following is the write-up posted by CNN Travel on Sri Lanka:- The South Asian island nation of Sri Lanka is as ancient as it is beautiful ; as complex a civilization  now as at any time in its 2,000 – year old history. Despite recent tumult ( the horrific terror attacks last Easter),  Sri Lanka remains an essential destination, en epicenter of history, with relics and ruins, temples and palaces, wildlife running free. Sitting in the Indian ocean off the southeastern tip of India, travelers may default in thinking of Sri Lanka as a beach getaway. But to truly immerse yourself in the country’s history, go inland and tour the country’s culture and jungle.
