Proud of our industry- and its bright futureEvery corner of the hotel industry has done its part to stay viable in the many meaningful, creative ways that it does during crises. One of our pillars is the hospitality ethos – delivered by people dedicated to service and the welcoming spirit of caring for others.
College students who choose to major in hospitality management exemplify that ethos. They are reflective of the faculty who teach them and our industry as a whole. Hospitality professionals are resilient, innovative, inclusive and compassionate, and current students studying hospitality are that and more. If you need a source of optimism about the future, watch these following videos and talk to our students –they, like seasoned professionals, are figuring out a path forward, hoping, and staying #HospitalityStrong!
I am proud of our global organization, the International Council of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management Education (ICHRIE), which came together under the leadership of outgoing president, Jeff Beck, of Michigan State University and incoming president Joy Dickerson, of the Culinary Institute of America. Our students made a support video message to their industry employers and mentors, and our faculty made two of them: one addressing our hospitality students and a humorous plea to the global hospitality consumer empathizing and asking for their patience. Enjoy.
As our industry recovers, and we advocate for additional and necessary support from legislatures for our current employees, don’t forget to practice positive pragmatism for our college students as we do every day in the Penn State School of Hospitality Management as do all our alumni. Every week we post on social media yet another inspiring video message from one of our successful Penn State Hotel & Restaurant Society (PSHRS) alumni members. Your alma mater, your company, your friends may have made them too. Please share them here. I, for one, will never tire of these positive messages.
When hotels are full again, remember, the college student today may just be your next great hire to create that hospitality ethos and welcome your guest. We need their ideas and energy in the very near future as the recovery unfolds.
