The #BeKindtoHospitality campaign

A group of hospitality businesses led by the curator Graham Chalmers of the Radisson Red Glasgow hotel is encouraging members of the public to be kind, considerate and understand that staffs are doing their best while following strict rules.

The aim is to improve the experience of hospitality workers already working under very stressful conditions, as well as to help the industry survive. Specifically, the campaign asks consumers to be kind and patient to workers in restaurants, bars and hotels who are working under unprecedented and in an extremely stressful environment due to the pandemic.

Supporters of the campaign, while sharing in everyone’s delight that hospitality in the UK is finally reopening properly, reiterate that it does not mean that all is well. As staffs try desperately to adjust to working in new ways, dealing with no - shows and customers arguing about rules, and expressing their own concerns of being out in public…the anxiety and stress caused to staff, has not gone away. In fact, in some cases, it can become worse.

The #BeKindtoHospitality campaign specifically serves as a reminder that hospitality team members are just like any other person navigating this pandemic. While its first priority will always be to keep staff and customers safe - it requests customers to be kind to hard-working staff; particularly at a time when they are in short supply at the moment and many businesses will be operating at reduced capacities as they reopen.

The man behind the campaign, Graham Chalmers explains further: “For example, the sheer volume of no-shows at restaurants and bars across the UK is having a devastating impact on businesses – to the point some are wondering if they can continue to stay open. If you book a table, please turn up – or at least call to let them know you’re not coming so they can offer it to someone else. It’s a tiny thing, a two-minute call, but it can make the difference between a venue surviving or not.”

Hospitality brings vibrancy & energy to communities that have been so dearly missed. Be kind to those who are looking after you, they will give it back and more. Remember no one died having to wait for 30min for a drink! So, Put yourself in their shoes and show your support through kindness.
