Faulty air conditioner at Sandals resort suspected of causing deaths of three guests

A faulty air conditioner leaking toxic coolant may have been to blame for the deaths of three Americans holidaying at the Emerald bay Sandals Resort in the Bahamas recently. The deceased who had all fallen ill and died as well as another guest, had been treated for symptoms at a hospital the night before.

One of the victims was Vincent Chiarella age 65, from Florida, died while celebrating the anniversary with his wife Donnis, 64 who was left paralyzed. Another man and woman - both from America - also died, but have yet to be named. All victims are said to have suffered convulsions before their deaths.

Austin, the Chiarella’s son, told ABC news that when his mother woke up she found herself paralyzed – unable to move and her late husband lying still. He added that ‘Her legs and arms was swollen and she couldn’t move and she screamed to get someone to come in the door.'

Donnis Chiarella was hospitalized in the Bahamas and later airlifted to Florida hospital in serious condition Samples collected from the bodies, the rooms where they were staying and the nearby area have been sent to a Philadelphia lab to examined. Results were expected within a week.

A social media post by Coucheron-Aamot, who was staying at one of the resorts ritzy villas which commands a nightly rate of up to US$ 1,227, said that ‘There was crime scene tape and security guards all around our unit, where the bodies of the guests - all confirmed to be American - were discovered by hotel personnel in at least two separate villas’.

In the post, Coucheron-Aamot - who said he was continuing his vacation at the resort despite the deaths - suggested that there may have been issues with some of the villas' air-condition systems that may have led to the deaths.  'It sounds like it may have been a fault with the a/c in the unit, causing a toxic coolant leak,' the post goes on to add. “It was hard to sleep last night - every time the a/c came on, I woke up”.

The luxurious five-star adults - only resort is all inclusive and sits in a secluded area within 500 acres of tropical land. It has a mile-long beach, three pools, 11 restaurants and an award-winning golf course. Guests are free to take part in day and night tennis, beach volleyball and basketball, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and even offer free weddings to people staying for three nights or longer.
