The beautiful island country that's the 'world's most family-friendly destination'

There are many things to consider when starting a new life abroad, but a recent analysis has found which destination is best for families.

There are many things to consider when relocating abroad, especially if you are moving as a family or planning to start one. Whether its safety, education, or child care, these factors are some of the most important things that need to be looked at before packing up and starting a new life elsewhere. Fortunately, Remitly, an American money transfer service, has launched a new immigration index ranking 82 countries across 24 categories.

Sri Lanka earned first place on the index, which measures countries against factors such as healthcare quality, economic strength, and safety metrics. The island country is noted for having an "impressive" education system and "incredibly low" childcare costs, resulting in it earning the title of the world’s most family-friendly country.

The immigration index assessed the quality and accessibility of education in each nation, using a statistics score from Radboud University on the average years of schooling adults have completed and the expected years of schooling for children in each country, The Independent reports.

The annual cost of childcare in each country was then calculated to give each country a family-friendly score out of 100. The beautiful country scored 63 overall, with childcare costs of just under $354.60 (£274) a year.

Sri Lanka, located in the Indian Ocean, is home to gorgeous beaches and vibrant wildlife and is renowned for its tea and cinnamon production. It is often recognised for its family-friendly hotels and warm reception.

Sweden followed the welcoming country with a score of 52.6, boasting high education but "moderate" childcare costs, similar to Norway, which came in third with a score of 51.2.

New Zealand and Iceland also made the top five family-friendly countries with scores of an impressive 0.9 out of one for their education.

Germany, Finland, Denmark, and Australia all scored highly for education yet had much higher childcare costs, ranging from $3,948.10 (£3042.15) to a whopping $16,439.40 (12667.13) per year.

Although the UK did not feature on the list, it was placed 19th in the index's top countries for immigrants to move to in 2025.
